Ice Hockey: What do Result, Totals, and Handicap mean?

The first time I tried betting was with Ice Hockey. I had absolutely no clue what I was doing, so I just went with the team whose logo I liked. The game ended 2 to 1, which taught me that pure vibes and hunches are rarely a good way to bet.

With hockey, it might look easy from a distance, but you quickly see that it’s a tough game where anything can happen. A great goalie might give you a long night of pain, watching the scoreboard as you pray for something to happen. Before you bet on Hockey, you need a solid strategy.

Pick a lane

If you’re a new player, start with the 1×2 market because it’s really easy to follow. You can find it under the ice hockey tab or on the NHL, KHL, SHL, Germany’s DEL, and Czech Extraliga pages.

The next thing you can try is totals. This option is great for those who prefer to try to guess how the game plays out, rather than guessing which team will win. Simply predict if there will be a lot of points scored or not. When you’re just starting out, a small bet will be enough to see how the game goes. A R29 bet will bring you roughly R53 back, so keep that in mind.

If you want to chase some easy odds, look at handicap lines. In hockey, it means that you think a certain team can win by a certain margin. For the full menu, simply visit https://yesplay.bet/sports/prematch/ice-hockey and click on a fixture to check all of the available betting options.

Time matters

Here’s something important I learned about betting on hockey the hard way: regular and overtime are two very different things! The rules here on YesPlay mention how regulation works (three 20-minute periods), including overtime, and a shootout. The 1×2 market with an “X” price in the middle, has to do with what happens after the end of those three periods.

There’s one more thing you need to remember: According to YesPlay’s ice hockey rules, the matches have to be played on the day they were scheduled for in order for your bet to be valid. Pick what you want to bet on and stake only what you can afford to lose.
